Hello! I just moved all of these work at home businesses, jobs and resources to this brand new site from singlemomshelp.blogspot .com. My original site got cluttered with recipes, gardening, amusing stories, and family friendly stuff. I wanted to make it easier for you to find work at home related resources.
The original site started out as a dedication to my Mom because she raised my Sister and me all by herself when she and Dad divorced. I added the work at home businesses in her honor, because I would have loved it if she had been able to work at home and be there when we got in from school.
I'm hoping that this site provides the opportunity for other Moms (or anyone) wishing to work from home and have more time with their families. I hope that the information you find here will be useful.

Getting Laid Off & Starting Over
Right before Christmas 2006 I was laid off of my customer service job after twelve and a half years. Our company restructured and began downsizing. Our small office was like family, and that was the worst part of the lay-off: missing my friends. I was fortunate to have worked with really nice people.
I loved customer service because I felt that serving others was my 'ministry'. Now, non-Christians, please don't leave. This site is not just for Christians, but for baby boomers (like me), and moms and dads or anyone wanting to work from home. But as I am a born again Christian, there are items on this site related to that, because that's part of who I am.
As customer service representatives we were given the authority to compensate customers for errors we made on their ads. And because I wanted to give them the same kind of service that I would like to receive, people appreciated when I'd admit our error, and make just compensation. Along with that, sometimes people would mention something bad that was happening to them at the time (i.e. I didn't renew my ad on time because of accident, illness, or death). Now, sometimes they didn't always seem sincere, but awful stuff does happen, and I just put myself in their place and tried to be compassionate. An especially sad example is the elderly wife or husband that just buried their spouse and has to sell their RV or vehicle to help pay funeral or hospital bills, or because they just "didn't need it now that he/she was gone". After helping them, before I hung up, I would ask if they would be offended if I prayed for them, their spouse or family member. In all my years in that position, no one ever turned me down. In fact, I've made some permanent friends of several customers (they were loyal and asked for me when they called about their ads) that had no one available at the time to console them except for a CSR on the telephone!
Now, even non-Christians will have read what doctors say confirming that prayer really does help sick people, and raises the morale of both the sick and dying.
I made sure that I kept my comments brief, after all my employer didn't pay me to chat. But I felt a need to lend a sympathetic ear, and a word of encouragement. I enjoyed working to make all 'my' customers happy with our service. I believe God gave me the gift of encouragement, and that's why customer service was a perfect 'fit' for me.
When I was first laid off, my first reaction (after a few moments) was, "Yikes! I'm almost 58; I have no computer skills whatsoever; and what will I do?" Then I took a deep breath, and remembered that God is in control, and when he shuts one door, he opens another. Looking back, it's kind of His way of nudging me out of my 'comfort zone'. I'm very much a creature of habit, and being in a 'rut' suits me fine. I grew up as an Army brat, and after moving a lot and attending 8 different schools, I prefer as little change as possible. But, hey, change is what living is all about. So...God, once again, removed me out of my 'zone' to make me 'grow'. And grow I am.
So....Post Layoff:
The Adventure Begins. The company I worked for gave me a generous severance so I had time to re-group, organize my apartment, de-clutter closets and recycle, and get into a routine of doing everything I can to help my husband who works 7 days a week, bless his heart. When we were working different shifts, he'd have to come home (while I was at work) and cook for himself - or more often than not, eat at fast food places. After I got laid off, we came up with recipes that he liked so that I could cook low-fat meals for him (a few of them are listed on my family-home-garden-pets.blogspot.com site - not all are low fat, but I had to include some of my grandma's and my favorites); and he began losing weight and feeling better.
I started looking online for work at home jobs or businesses that I could get into, but without computer experience I was a dead duck. I finally was forced to go on unemployment and the lady at their office 'told' me that I couldn't possibly have worked in customer service over 12 years and not know computer programs. I explained that I worked solely at a monitor for those years, and had no access to computer programs, or the internet.
I spent months trying to find a legitimate home based job, finally choosing to start a 'business' through Web Colleagues, who set me up with Blogger, Google Adsense, Clickbank, and a Yahoo mail address. So far I have earned less than $1.00 in over 8 months, but I understand that it takes quite a while to get your blog noticed, since there are millions of them out there! I still believe that God wants me doing this. I have a great peace about it. (Not to mention, that I've got the Irish gift of gab, and love writing! Ha.)
Just to show you how God provides for His children: My unemployment had run out, we had several big car repair bills, and guess what? Out of the blue came two sources of unexpected money: the first was a life insurance policy that my father took out for me upon my birth 58 years ago! I never knew anything about it. The second source was from my ex husband, who is now deceased. Apparently, he had left me his life insurance money from his last job back in the 1970's. Oh, my, what a blessing! God is so good to us. That surprise money has gotten us through. And I never in a million years would have guessed at either of those sources. I hadn't seen my Dad since my parents split back in 1961! And my ex and I have been divorced for 15 years! (I just had to throw that in to remind me and you that God is watching out for us!)
I have made several changes to this site since it started. First, I began with amusing stories that my Mom had always told about herself, and then additional articles related to her. Then I decided that it needed to be focused to do some good - to provide what many people want today: work at home jobs and businesses - for anyone (moms, dads, or women or men). I've found over 30 different work at home jobs and businesses so far, and I've got many more to add; but thought I needed to get more into the 'blogging' part of this site to let people get to know me better. And hopefully, I'll get to know you, too.
My dear husband has supported me from 'day one'. He has patiently taught me computer basics. He's also chided me when I so often lost patience (and our computers are side by side, so he did get stuck listening to me rant). The computer I'm using is older and very slow. He would listen to me gripe and then ask, "Why are you getting so frustrated? There's nothing you can do about it, so why get upset?" He was so right, and I was immediately reminded that God tells us to have patience many, many times in the Bible, so I guess he meant it!! I just had to get that through my thick German / Irish head!! Then one day, it was a revelation to me - or an epiphany - or whatever you want to call it. It must have been God's Spirit reminding me that if my computer isn't working - and I have lots to do - to just let it alone for a while. Go do something else and come back to it. And sure enough, it worked! That particular day, when I was all ready to start fussing and fuming - I left my computer work, and went and did dishes and some housework, and sure enough, when I came back to it my computer was working fine! Now, my impatience wouldn't have solved anything, except to raise my blood pressure, and upset my poor husband. That's one of the best lessons I've learned recently, and it's still working! Praise God for His Spirit living in us!
Now you're asking what this new adventure has been like so far.....
Well, I feel 20 years younger! Truly! I haven't learned so much new stuff in years! I'm rejuvenated! I'm hooked on learning. I've read a number of Dummies books, HTML (beginner) books, and websites to help beginner bloggers. I'm so excited about writing that I have trouble sleeping. I'll get up groggy eyed in the morning and have a handful of pages that I wrote all through the night - I'd wake up and just have to write down my ideas. I wrote a song (although I need to find out how to get music set to it) in a few minutes. I know that it was the Holy Spirit giving it to me because I could not have written it in a few minutes - not just waking up from sleeping!
All this learning has spurred us both into learning how to do soduku puzzles, and now we're hooked. We're at the age when stretching your brain is very good for you. (I have a hard time putting them down until I've solved them.)
I could not have gotten as far with this site as I am - with no previous computer experience - without the help of my husband. He's my cheerleader. He puts things into perspective for me when I've got so much information to dispense that I can't see the 'big picture' or even how to go about setting priorities. He brainstorms by asking me pertinent questions, and before I know it I've got my agenda for the day. He's got faith in my writing, my abilities, and my intelligence. And that's meant the world to me! He's my hero!!
He also does not want me working in an office setting any more because I have Multiple Chemical Sensitivities and because of my many allergies, I use Fragrance-free and Chemical-free Products
I'll be adding to the products 'post' as I find new items for us to use.
Well, thanks for listening. I hope you'll come back!
Pam

Pam
